Rufino Santos

Rufino Jiao Cardinal Santos ( born August 6, 1908 in Guagua, Philippines, † September 3, 1973 in Manila ) was Archbishop of Manila.

Life

Rufino Jiao Santos studied in Manila, and later in Rome, the subjects philosophy and Catholic theology. He completed his doctorate in canon law and theology. In 1931 he received the sacrament of Holy Orders and was subsequently employed as a pastor in the Archdiocese of Manila. From 1934 to 1938 he took the lead duties on the diocesan level. During the Second World War, he spent a year in captivity and was released only a few hours before his scheduled execution by American troops. From 1945 to 1947 he served as Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Manila management.

1947 Pope Pius XII appointed him. Titular Bishop of Barca and Auxiliary Bishop of Manila. In 1949 he became Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Lipa and 1950 Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Infanta. Rufino Jiao Santos 1951, the additional task of the military Bishop of the Philippines. In 1953 he became Archbishop of Manila. Pope John XXIII. took him on 28 March 1960 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria ai Monti to the College of Cardinals. Rufino Jiao Santos participated in several sessions of the Second Vatican Council and was a member of the Coetus Internationalis Patrum. He died on September 3, 1973 in Manila, and was buried in the local cathedral.
