The Afghanistan Rugby Federation (AFR ) is the official Rugby Federation of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.

The aim of AFR is to make the young Afghan teams compete internationally. This is intended to contribute to strengthen national pride and cohesion among the talented young Afghans.

Background

Afghanistan has a native sport that has a certain resemblance to rugby. This sport called Buzkashi, and can be compared to a cross between rugby and polo. The player's goal is to grab the carcass of a headless goat or a sheep and bring them to the enemy over the goal line. The game was called by the Society for Creative Anachronism in the 70s as " Sheep Rugby ". Rugby was played sporadically in Afghanistan, often by invading armies. The game was first introduced from British India and was played by British troops. After their departure, the interest disappeared in the game. In recent times, rugby was introduced by foreign forces once again and was played together with British, Australian, French, Canadian, and even American troops in their bivouacs. However, the Afghan people could not watch while playing this.

History

The Afghanistan Rugby Federation (ARF ) was officially on May 20. Founded in 2011 with the aim and intention to make rugby in Afghanistan soon to a sport. The ARF is registered with the National Olympic Committee and approved by the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. The Afghanistan Rugby Federation is in the process of developing a statewide organization. The ARF is sure that rugby is only thrive when the game is played by a large number of members of the younger generation and has a plan for " Afghan school rugby " (ASR). With this project the sport in Afghanistan is to be made popular and drug addiction and criminal activity of the young generation can be reduced by exercise.
