Ruhakana Rugunda

Ruhakana Rugunda ( born November 7, 1947 in Kabale ) is a Ugandan politician and diplomat. Rugunda is currently Ambassador of Uganda to the United Nations in New York. Previously, he served as Minister of Internal Affairs and Member of Parliament for Kabale.

Rugunda was born in Kabale district. He attended Kigezi School and Busoga College. He then studied at Makerere University and later took his medical degree at the University of Zambia. He then studied at the University of California, Berkeley and received a diploma in Public Health.

Rugunda worked subsequently as a staff physician in Zambia, as a physician in Washington DC General Hospital and at the Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi. In 1985, he met at the inn "Zum Grünen Jäger " in Unterolberndorf with leaders of the National Resistance Movement (NRM ) to draw up a constitution for the liberated Uganda.

Over the years was Rugunda Health Minister, Foreign Minister, Minister of Information, labor, transport and communications minister, Commissioner of Animal Industry, Game and Fisheries. In addition, he was Chairman of the Council of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

In July 2006 Rugunda led a government team to Juba in Sudan to conduct peace negotiations with the Lord's Resistance Army. Since December 2008 Rugunda Ambassador of Uganda is at the United Nations in New York. Uganda was from January 2009 for two years non-permanent member of the Security Council.
