Ruhleben (Berlin U-Bahn)

Metro Station Ruhleben is a Berlin U -Bahn station on the U2 line in the district of Charlottenburg- Wilmersdorf district of Westend. It was opened in 1929 and is today the western terminus of the underground line U2.

History

Metro Station Ruhleben today's Metro Line 2 was built in 1929 and opened on 22 December of the same year. He is to this day the endpoint of the former main line dar. The architect Alfred Grenander built on an embankment a functional railway station with a covered central platform and a lobby below. Since the tracks are not continued behind the platform, the trains have to turn on the platform; but assuming that the capacity of the station is therefore highly restricted, is wrong. In 1946 there was an accident when a train drove out over the end of the platform and only on the steep slope came to a halt for Stendelweg.

Until the opening of Metro Line 7 in 1984 to Rathaus Spandau was the Ruhleben main connection Spandau station on the Berlin U- Bahn network and was served in the rush hour around every three minutes. Several bus lines distributed from here to the passengers in the Spandau Gatow districts / Kladow, Staaken, Falkenhagener box and hook field. The strong transfer traffic between bus and subway was organized by a model corresponding built-in escalators. A special feature in Berlin was also the preserved to this day clock to display the next subway exit at the front ( bus arrival from Spandau) to the station. The other way round was the bus drivers indicated by a red signal lamp at the stop, whether a subway has just reached the station. In this case, the bus would have waited a little longer. The lamp is also still preserved and was used in a similar form to other subway stations.

A planned since the 1920s, distance extension of the U2 Rathaus Spandau on by hook field or later to Falkenhagener field was set aside in favor of the then controversial subway line 7. The City Hall subway station Spandau but already Bauvorleistungen incurred for the extension of the subway line 2 Ruhleben is now more likely to be weaker unused subway stations, for the BVG had, however, already in 1984 provided by the drastic reduction of the shuttle buses. Therefore, can the BVG many subway trains now go only to Theodor- Heuss-Platz. However, this is also due to the strong competition to the Metro Ruhleben, as regards the transfer traffic:

  • The U7 to Rathaus Spandau,
  • An intensive bus on the highway between Charlottenburg and Spandau south,
  • The since 1998 commissioned in Spandau suburban railway S-Bahn

The less powerful regional traffic on West Cross and Jungfernheide to Spandau plays a supporting role.

Since 1996 the terminus of U2 has an elevator system, so that a barrier-free access to the platform is possible. In the years 2010/2011 involved extensive work on the basic rehabilitation of the railway station and Sanierierung the embankment after the track was closed due 2 abgerutschter embankments since 2007. The metro was operating during the construction works in the section Olympic Stadium - set Ruhleben. The construction costs amounted to 7.7 million euros.

In the meadow at the south exit of the station is a boulder that was transported from the Murellenschlucht to this place, and is listed as a natural monument (see boulders in the Murellenschlucht ).
