History

So-called " Ruhraaken " transported the coal mines of the Mülheim from the 17th century to Duisburg. At this time, the Ruhr was the most important route for transportation of coal. 1780, the Ruhr to Langschede was passable. As of 1847, the railroad took over more and more shipments so that the watch Marine lost its importance and was discontinued in 1889. In order to increase their economic power, the city of Mülheim decided to build a port and to create a direct connection to the Port of Duisburg. For this, the Ruhr between the ports was partially a new bed (punctures: Schleusenkanal Raffelberg ) since the original Ruhr leadership was unsuitable for the large Rhine ships. The construction took twelve years. The difference in height of about ten meters between the towns were offset by the construction of military Raffelberg / Ruhr Raffelberg lock and weir Duisburg Ruhr / Ruhr lock Duisburg. The waterway was opened in 1927. The height of the first barrage is so large that it is used in hydro power plant Raffelberg for energy. The Ruhr military Duisburg in 1957 was replaced by a new building.

The barrage Duisburg with the Ruhr and the Ruhr sluice weir and the Rhine -Ruhr port belong to the Route of Industrial Heritage.
