Ruhrtriennale

The Ruhr Triennale is an international arts festival in the Ruhr.

Venues

Were scenes of the Ruhr Triennale, the industrial heritage of the region, the majority of which during the International Building Exhibition Emscher Park from 1989 to 1999 in venues for music, theater, literature and film, visual arts, dance and performance transforms. The focus is on interdisciplinary new productions, premieres and new productions that address the specifics of each venues: theater and opera combine in former machine halls and coking plants with developments in the visual arts, pop and concert music.

The Centennial Hall Bochum with the adjacent turbine hall and the Damfgebläsehaus is the natural center of the Ruhr Triennale. Other venues include:

History

The RuhrTriennale place since 2002, a year in a cycle of three years changing artistic direction instead. Founding artistic director Gerard Mortier was. He had held the position of director from 2002 to 2004.

Between 2005 and 2007, the second RuhrTriennale took place under the artistic direction of Jürgen Flimm. The unifying theme of his first season was the relationship between industrialization and romance. In the second and third year form epochs thematic focuses: 2006 Man of the Baroque was the focus, the program in 2007, dealt with the Middle Ages.

After the death of the nominee director, Marie Zimmermann in April 2007, Jürgen Flimm had agreed to conduct together with Jürgen Krings also the season of 2008. Marie Zimmermann's preoccupation with the " stranger " was therefore also the theme: " From strangers ."

Willy Decker joined in 2009 from Jürgen Flimm and commenced the third Ruhr Triennale 2009 to 2011. Under his artistic direction the Ruhr Triennale explored in the three seasons, the relationship of art and creativity on the one hand and religion on the other. In 2009, it set up the view of the Jewish culture, in 2010, the Islamic, and finally in 2011 to the Buddhist culture.

Director of the Ruhr Triennale 2012 - 2014 is the composer and director Heiner Goebbels, who is best known for compositions and productions in the field of musical theater. Under his leadership, the Ruhr Triennale gets the subtitle " International Festival of the Arts " and the visual arts is given a focus.

On 27 May 2013, the Dutch director and theater director Johan Simons was announced as the director for the Ruhr Triennale 2015 to 2017.

Artists and rows

From 2003 to 2010, the concert series Century of Song took place in the international songwriter grappled with the traditions of popular song. After eight seasons under the direction of Thomas Wördehoff it came in 2010 to a conceptual change of the Century of Song. The title was retained, but the substantive orientation moved more closer to the themes that determine the Festival each. New curator of the concert series was Christoph Gurk before the series was discontinued in 2011. Since 2012, found more concerts take place on " the edge of the Pops " ( Heiner Goebbels ), who no longer are, however, entitled Century of Song.

Some productions of the Ruhr Triennale were seen internationally:

David Pountney's staging of Bernd Alois Zimmermann's opera " Die Soldaten" was on display in 2008 in New York.

In January 2009, was to be seen, with the Ruhr Triennale opened in 2007 at the Opéra de Lyon Willy Decker's production of " Le Vin herbé " by Frank Martin.

Christoph Schlingensief's Fluxus - oratorio " A Church of Fear vs. the Alien Within " from the year 2008 opened on 1 May 2009, the Berlin Theatre Meeting. In addition, this production plays at the Holland Festival in Amsterdam in June 2009.

Since 2012, value is placed on trying to show productions of the Ruhr Triennale in other places. Under the title Tour Triennale some productions of the seasons 2012 and 2013 are shown internationally.

Organization

Carriers of the Ruhr Triennale is the Kultur Ruhr GmbH, based in Gelsenkirchen. The other three program pillars of Kultur Ruhr GmbH, in addition to the Ruhr Triennale the choral work watch, the dance scene dysentery and Urban Arts Ruhr. These three institutions provide in addition to their other programmatic work a regular contribution to the Ruhr Triennale.

Sponsors and shareholders are the Minister President of North Rhine -Westphalia, the Ruhr Regional Association and the Association Pro Ruhr.

The German Federal Cultural Foundation and the Arts Foundation NRW also promote numerous individual productions.

Under the directorship of Jürgen Flimm a Board of Trustees was established, which includes, among other things Alfred Biolek, Dieter Gorny and Michael Vesper. In addition to the Board of Trustees, the association founded in 2005, the Friends of the Ruhr Triennale for the moral and material support of the festival dedicated.

The Ruhr Triennale 2013 was held from October 6, 2013 from 23 August.
