Rui Barros (2011)

Rui Gil Soares de Barros (* November 24, 1965 in Paredes ) is a former Portuguese football player and current coach. The short, stocky Rui Barros was famous for his quick dribbling and dangerous crosses.

Career

Barros began his football career at FC Porto, where he played the 1985/1986 season, but could not prevail, and was loaned to the small Serie A club Varzim SC. His debut in the Portuguese national football team gave Rui Barros on 29 March 1987 in the European Championship qualifier against Malta in Funchal / Madeira. He came in his career in 36 games for Portugal in the next nine years, where he scored but for a midfielder with four goals too few matches.

After his success at Varzim SC overtook him the same FC Porto in the next season back. Barros became the leading players of the squad. He led the team to win the World Cup against Peñarol Montevideo and Uruguay to victory over Ajax Amsterdam in the UEFA Super Cup.

After these successes the midfield Juventus director became aware of Barros and signed him for two years by 1988 until 1990. Barros was elected in 1988 in Portugal Footballer of the Year. One of the low points in Rui Barros career was missed by a few points to qualify for the 1990 World Cup in Italy with the national team.

In the 1990-1991 season he moved to AS Monaco where he played until 1993. With Monaco in 1992 he lost the final of the Cup Winners' Cup against the team of Werder Bremen. In the 1993/94 season he played at Olympique Marseille and witnessed the scandal surrounding the rigged games in the French league, which meant that Marseille was sanctioned with the demotion. Then Barros returned to his hometown club FC Porto, where e is the last year played his football career. He was there when the FC Porto in 1994 /95 to 1998/99 national champion titles won five in a row.

After his return to Portugal, he played a few times with the national team, but was not called by coach António Oliveira in the squad for the EURO 1996. Oliveira preferred the fast forgotten Hugo Porfírio instead of Rui Barros, which led to some controversy with the press in the country. His last appearance for the national team had Barros on December 14, 1996 the World Cup qualifier against Germany in Lisbon.

Rui Barros officially ended his footballer existence in the 1999/2000 season at the age of 34 years. In the season 2005/ 06 he was assistant coach of the Dutch coach Co Adriaanse, he successfully represented a transitional period after his release in August 2006 and the team won the Portuguese Super Cup against FC Porto.
