Rui Alberto Faria da Costa ( born October 5, 1986 in Póvoa de Varzim ) is a Portuguese cyclist and road cycling world champion of 2013.

Sports career

Rui Costa was third at the 2005 stage of the Volta ao Portugal do Futuro. In 2006 he finished the Clássica de Guimarães second place and the prologue of the Volta ao Portugal do Futuro he finished third. Since 2007, Costa went for the Portuguese Professional Continental team Benfica. In his first year there he won the overall title at the Giro delle Regioni for themselves.

In 2010 he won the Portuguese Championship in the time trial on the road. After the finish at the 6th stage of the Tour de France 2010, Rui Costa delivered a confrontation with the Spaniard Carlos Barredo. Barredo struck with the front wheel of his bicycle at him, Rui Costa took off the wheel and retaliated with punches. Barredo was pissed about the fact that the Portuguese had his arm touches on the closing kilometers.

Rui Costa and his brother Mário tested positive for the Portuguese national championship on Methylhexanamine and then locked by WADA. The lock was canceled in 2011, however, since the agent is no longer on the list of banned drugs from this season. Then he signed a new three -year contract with Movistar team. On 9 July 2011, he won his first Tour de France stage when he prevailed on the way from Aigurande to Super Besse before the Belgian Philippe Gilbert on the final climb.

As the first Portuguese Costa won in June 2012, the overall victory at the Tour de Suisse and was able to celebrate the biggest success of his career. The foundation stone for the Tour victory, he laid the stage win at the second part to Verbier.

In 2013 he was able to repeat last year's success at the Tour de Suisse, where he won two days this time even sections. He then repeated his success at the national time trial championships from 2010. During the subsequent Tour de France he won two stages. The road cycling world championships in the fall of 2013 in Florence, he was in the road race Joaquim Rodriguez hit in the two sprint and thus became the first Portuguese world champion in road cycling.

Honors

2012 and 2013 Rui Costa was elected Portugal's Sportsman of the Year. In both years, he directed the footballer Cristiano Ronaldo in second place.
