Ruinaulta

Rhine loop in the Ruinaulta and the bridge Isla Bella

The Ruinaulta or Rhine Gorge is a up to 400 meters deep and about 13 km long canyon of the Anterior Rhine between Ilanz and the mouth of the Rhine at Reichenau Behind the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland. The Romansh name, Ruinaulta ' is composed of the two words Ruina ( scree, quarry ) and Aulta (high).

Formation

The Ruinaulta created by the Flims rockslide nearly 10,000 years ago. Back then broke out between the Flims rock and Piz Grisch over 10,000 million cubic meters of rock and buried from the anterior Rhine valley between the present villages Castrisch and Reichenau under a several hundred meters thick mass of debris.

Since the Anterior Rhine could not drain away, a lake was dammed for a length of about 25 km. Over time, the river cut deep into the landslide mass and the Ilanzer lake drained away. What remained was the Ruinaulta with its steep limestone cliffs and impressive rock formations.

Access

The only continuous road through the gorge is the stretch of the Rhaetian Railway. In the gorge the railway stations of Trin, Versam - Safien and Valendas - sagogn lie. The road from Ilanz about Versam to Bonaduz runs high above the gorge. The Rhine Gorge and the surrounding communities are now accessible by several marked trails.

At the station of Trin Punt Ruinaulta the Rhine spans.
