Ruissalo

Ruissalo [ Ruis ˌ sɑlo ] (Finnish, Swedish: Runsala ) is a Finnish island in the Baltic Sea. It is located in the archipelago before the city of Turku. She is also one of the districts of Turku.

Geography

Ruissalo is located west of downtown between the district Pansio on the mainland and the island Hirvensalo. It is connected by bridge to the mainland.

With a length of about six kilometers and an average width of about one kilometer Ruissalo one of the larger islands of the Turku archipelago. It is covered in the north and west of Forest, one of the oldest oak population in Finland is located there. To the east of the island, there are wooded areas and grasslands.

Use

The island is primarily used as a recreational area. There are only 126 reported inhabitants ( as of 2004).

Large parts are located in a conservation area. A station in the southeastern part Ruissalos, near the bridge to the mainland, informed about the nature and landscape of the island. To find a campsite, in the center, a golf course and the Botanical Garden of the University of Turku on the west tip Ruissalos. Various tourist cafes are spread throughout the island. The residential development is essentially limited to cottages on the shore, especially on the south coast.

The rock festival Ruisrock ( " the Finnish Woodstock ", record crowds: 71,000 ) place here every year in early summer.
