RÅ«jiena

Rūjiena ( German: Rujen, Estonian Ruhja ) is a town in northern Latvia in the small river Ruja.

History

The story Rūjienas dates back to the 14th century. At that time the village was built near a formed in the 13th century Teutonic castle. The castle was destroyed in 1560 by Russian troops during the Livonian War. Rūjiena was subsequently rebuilt. The pastor Gustav Bergmann (1749-1814, great-grandfather of the surgeon Ernst von Bergmann ) printed 1807 in his house print shop in Rūjiena the first collection of Latvian folk songs. 1919 here was erected under the Colonel Jorgis Zemitāns with the help of Estonia, the Latvian North corps. From 1937-1944 and from 1977-1996 was a railway line to Riga, which ended in the city.
