Rukungiri District

Rukungiri is a district in south-western Uganda, bordering the Lake Edward. The main town is the same Rukungiri. The district encompasses the two counties Rujumbura and Rubabo. He has after the census of 2002 308.696 inhabitants in an area of 2860 km ².

The district was created in 1974 as North Kigezi and in 1980 he received the name of Rukungiri. In July 2001, part of the district was separated and the new district Kanungu formed.

Society

There are spoken Ruhororo, Runyankore and Rukiga.

Geography

The district lies at an altitude of about 615-1864 m above sea level. Rukungiri also share in the Queen Elizabeth National Park.
