Geographical Location

Rullstorf lies to the west of the nature reserve bank of the Elbe - Drawehn. The community belongs to the Samtgemeinde Scharnebeck, which has its headquarters in the town of Scharnebeck.

History

The surroundings of Rullstorf has been inhabited for thousands of years. Excavations under the direction of archaeologist Wilhelm supply from the Lower Saxony State Office for Monument on the hill of Kronsberg the remains of the nave were discovered that could be dated to about 4000 years before Christ, on the basis of pottery finds. It is the oldest documented house in what is now Lower Saxony. The performed 1979-2009 excavations showed that there was a continuous settlement since the Bronze Age through the time of the Lombards and the Old Saxons at Rullstorf.

During the excavations a horse burial ground was discovered. It is one of the largest in Germany, is the largest known late Saxon horse cemetery. On the area of ​​42 horses were buried, usually they lay with their heads toward the south. The excavated in 2000 horse in horse grave 5075, which was buried as grave goods to a funeral pyre with complete riding equipment, however, was aligned exactly the opposite. None of the other buried in Rullstorf horse was buried with saddle, bridle or other accessories. The findings have enabled the reconstruction of the Saxon riding equipment of the 7th century, which is shown in the German Horse Museum in Verden on the Aller.
