Rum, Hungary

Rum ( German: Rum ) is a municipality in western Hungary Vas county, located in the vicinity of Szombathely, 20 kilometers from the Austrian border.

Geographical location

Rum is located on the left bank of the Raab, on the Hungarian road no 87 ( Kőszeg Kám ), 20 km south-east of Szombathely. It is easily accessible from the main road No. 8 ( Budapest - Graz), when you turn on Kám on the road No. 87.

Origin of the name

The name Rum is derived from the German personal name or fame from the Rummy family name.

History

Even in Roman times the road led from Sabaria after Sophianae about the Raab. The remains of the bridge and guardhouse for the soldiers were disclosed. The piles of wooden bridge in the river bed at low water level also visible today. Also known is the the items belonging cemetery.

" Terra rum " says the oldest document from 1246 that mentions his name. During the Tatar campaign in 1242, the area was depopulated, probably so it is as a country ( "Terra" ) and not referenced as a settlement. In 1260 it was referred to as "terra castri RWM ", 1560 as " RWM fortalicium " (Castle, Castle ) - probably a reference to the fortress from which the bridge was guarded. 1619 the settlement was first mentioned as " Rum oppidum " ( Field Town ).

In 1857, 645 people lived here in 68 houses. 1869 burned down the whole village. In 1910 there were 1315 inhabitants, in 2008, 1,258 people lived here; today's population, according to the Homepage of the municipality in 1280.

Since 1988 rum is an independent municipality. In 1990 the first free elections for self-government took place.

Culture and sights

  • The Roman Catholic church, dedicated to St. Ladislaus, in the Gothic style of the 14th century, and later the Baroque style.
  • The Castle of Bezerédj family. In the Middle Ages, at this point a guard tower, today the castle is a reform school.

Economy and Transport

The main employment sector of the population has traditionally been agriculture. At the time of the People's Republic of farmers working in a production cooperative. Since 1990, the successor company also engaged in trade and services. It also operates a gravel pit.
