Rumford Prize

The Rumford Prize is a science prize for physics. It is awarded by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences to scientists working in the United States, for discoveries in the field of thermodynamics and optics.

Although the Academy in 1796 by Count Rumford received a donation of $ 5,000 for the construction of the prize, the prize was awarded in 1839 for the first time. Today he is one of seven scientific prizes, which are awarded by the Academy. The price should be allocated according to the wishes of the donor every two years, but was always awarded in reality at irregular intervals of one to several years in each case to one or more scientists. The preliminary final award was 2008. The award consists of a silver-gilt medal.
