Rumilly (Haute-Savoie)

Rumilly is a small town in France, located in the department of Haute -Savoie and the Rhone -Alpes region, with 13,667 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ).

History

The Romans recognized in the 2nd century BC, the strategic importance of the place and built at the confluence of Nephaz and Cheran a bridge and a fortified enclosure. The developing place was called Romillia. In the 10th century the Counts of Geneva and the bishops of Geneva, owner of the place and built a castle on the site of the old Roman citadel. In the 15th century, the dukes of Savoy build from the defense system of the city. 1419, the village belonged to the Duke Amadeus VIII of Savoy.

In 1630, Louis XIII conquered. Rumilly and destroyed castle and fortifications. 1690 formed a resistance against the troops of Louis XIV under the command of General St. Ruth.
