Background

The singer and guitarist Del Shannon and keyboardist Max Crook played together in a band that in 1960 won a record deal. Crook had at this time a work based on the Clavioline instrument that Musitron invented. After the first recordings for the record deal were not particularly successful, they were persuaded by their manager to take a previously written song Little Runaway new and to make the characteristic sound of Musitrons in the foreground. The song was released in 1961 and immediately a great success. Through a performance by the band in the show by Dick Clark, American Bandstand, the song eventually reached number one in the U.S. charts. Shortly after the song was also a number -one hit in the UK charts. However, a re-recording of 1967 did not reach the Billboard Hot 100 in 1986, a further re-recording was used as the theme song for the U.S. crime series Crime Story.

The song has been widely gecovert, inter alia, the Traveling Wilburys, Elvis Presley, The McCoys, Bonnie Raitt, the Small Faces and Queen Paul Rodgers ( 2008).
