Runde

The part of the municipality Herøy Runde (old spellings Rundøy or " RUNDO " ) is located on the west coast of Norway in More og Romsdal Fylke, southwest of Ålesund. The 100 inhabitants of the island spread over the villages round and Goksøyr.

Breeding birds on Round

The island is known as Scandinavia's southernmost breeding colony of seabirds. In the steep cliffs every year brood about 170,000 seabird pairs.

Even gulls, black-backed gulls, herring gulls, oystercatchers and eider ducks and geese are breeding birds on fire round and proliferates.

The Round - treasure

Round was also known as Treasure Island, since 1972 considerable quantities of gold and silver coins of the Dutch East Indies sailor " Akerendam " were recovered, which is shattered in 1725 in a storm on the cliffs of the island and dropped. Since April 2011, a part of the treasure is exhibited in the round Miljøsenter.

Economy and Tourism

Transport links

The island is connected by a bridge ( Rundebrua ) with the neighboring island Remøya and therefore very accessible. By Eiksundtunnel, currently the deepest undersea tunnel in the world, round is practically achievable without domestic ferry.

The nearest port of Hurtigruten is located in about 15 km away Torvik.

The nearest airports are located in Ålesund ( Vigra) and Ørsta / Volda ( Hovden ).
