Rungstedlund

The Karen Blixen Museum in Rungsted Kyst in Denmark deals with the life and work of the Danish writer Karen Blixen. The museum is located in the birthplace and home of the author, 20 km north of Copenhagen, the Øresund Strait. The 40 acre grounds behind the house was declared at the request of Karen Blixen bird sanctuary.

Rungstedlund

The oldest parts of the house date from circa 1680. The house has long been an inn, Ludvig Holberg and John Ewald lived on Rungstedlund as guests. Johannes Ewald lived there very happily from 1773-1775 and wrote some of his major works, including the poem Rungsteds Beatitudes and the autobiography Life and Opinions. 1803 closed the inn and has been converted into a farm. 1879 bought by the father of Karen Blixen 's house with the lands. 1898 burned down the South and the East Wing and were not rebuilt. The museum is located in the west wing of the building.

The Museum

The museum shows not only the original furnishings, a photographic biography Blixen, Blixen painted pictures, Maasai spears and shields, Blixen's typewriter and the phonograph, Denys Finch Hatton had given her. One room houses a library with Blixen's works and books that had belonged to her. Furthermore, letters, poems and first manuscripts from Blixen's youth are issued. The museum features a movie room where a documentary about Karen Blixen is seen. In the so-called bird space with changing exhibitions. Most exhibitions are related to birds. 2009/2010 is located in the bird room, an exhibition about the inhabitants of Rungstedlund and its history.

Park

The house also has a park-like garden were declared at the request Blixen's a bird sanctuary. The Danish Ornithological Society ( Dansk Ornitologisk Forening ) in charge of the bird sanctuary. More than 40 different species of birds live in the park, including Fieldfares, Hawfinch, kestrels, flycatchers and woodpeckers. In the back part of the park is Karen Blixen's grave. The park includes a small Buchenwald, where some houses are at an age of 250 to 300 years. There is also " Ewald's Hill", named after Johannes Ewald.
