Running Mate

As his running mate a person is referred to in the United States and other English-speaking countries, is competing as a running mate, or deputy in an election on the side of the actual candidates for high office. The term usually the Vice President of the United States is meant, which is often referred to as the running mate of the President. On the state level, a candidate for the office of Lieutenant Governor is often called running mate. However, a prerequisite is that the governor and lieutenant governor jointly participate in the election and can not be selected independently ( as is practiced in some countries ).
