Ruoms

Ruoms is a touristy village with 2256 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the French department Ardèche.

Geography

The community is located right on the river Ardèche, which is dammed here at a small weir. Nearby is the Beaume and Chassezac open into the river. The area of the town is 1,214 acres ( 12.14 km ² / 4.69 sq mi ), the height varies between 80 m and 252 m above sea level. The climate of the place belongs to the Mediterranean climate.

History

The town was founded in the 3rd century. At the confluence of three rivers (Ardèche, Beaume and Chassezac ) is the medieval village Ruoms. It was formed in the tenth century in the vicinity of a priory, which was founded by the monks of the Abbey of Cluny. From this time the " Chapel of Our Lady " (La Chapelle Notre Dame) received has remained. The historic town center is surrounded by a city wall with six towers, flanked by some of the houses and the church of the eleventh and twelfth centuries.

With the construction of the road along the gorges of Ardeche in 1866 and the expansion of the railway network, which was completed in 1876, Ruoms became an important economic center. Economy and Tourism

Ruoms is centrally located in the wine region Côtes du Vivarais, a wine cooperative and several wineries sell wine directly to the consumer. In addition Ruoms is a local center for canoeing and outdoor tourism in the region with appropriate camping sites and recreational opportunities. The main source of income these days is tourism.

A large market is held on Fridays in the morning until about 13 clock instead, where you can buy food in addition to the usual tourist items too. Near the church was an Interactive Museum, the Vinimage was set up to inform about the wine growing and wine in the region.

Beer from Ruoms

Tourists know Ruoms mainly because of its proximity to the approximately 30 km long canyon of the Ardèche, but this place was once known for its brewery. It was founded as a site based in Carcassonne brewery Fritz Lauer 1874 and established different types of beer. The severe economic conditions of the twentieth century, they could no longer meet eventually and it was closed in 1967.
