Rupat ( indonesian Pulau Rupat ) is an Indonesian island off the northeast coast of Sumatra in the Strait of Malacca located.

Geography

With an area of 1490 km ², it is by Rantau is the second largest of a series of lying in this region islands; the next of these islands is in the southeast Bengkalis.

Rupat is an approximately circular and flat island with a circumference of 154 km and a diameter of about 50 km. From the island of Sumatra in the south by a Rupat is only about two kilometers wide estuary, the Rupat Street ( Selat Rupat ), separately.

Management

Administratively, the island is part of the government district ( kabupaten ) Bengkalis Riau province and consists of the two sub-districts ( Kecamatan ) Rupat in the south and in the north Rupat Utara. Rupat is inhabited by about 30,000 people; the two most important settlements on the island are the respective principal places of the sub-districts, Batu Panjang in the south, as well as Tanjung Medang on the north coast.
