Rupelmonde

Rupelmonde is since 1977 part of the municipality Kruibeke in Flanders ( province of East Flanders ), Belgium. The town lies on the left bank of the Escaut, opposite the mouth of the river Rupel, in Waasland ( Land van Waas ) and the Natural Park Scheldeland, southwest of Antwerp. Rupelmonde counts 2,878 inhabitants ( 1 January 2004).

History

Since the 12th century, Rupelmonde had developed into an important trading center. 1271 Margaretha van Constantin Opel the place customs privileges for the Scheldt and the Rupel. Since the 14th century Rupelmonde had city status. In the late Middle Ages was followed by numerous wars of economic decline. But the city had at the beginning of the early modern period some importance.

The place name is connected by the Battle of Rupelmonde 1452 with the struggle Phillips of the Good, Duke of Burgundy against the freedom-loving citizens of Ghent. In the battle came along with many other nameless remaining son Cornelius Phillips also by a lance thrust in his face died. He had not worn for convenience belonging to his helmet chin and neck protection.

People

On March 5, 1512 Gerhard Mercator was born in Rupelmonde, which should come as a cartographer to world fame in Duisburg.
