Rupert Riedl

Rupert Riedl ( born February 22, 1925 in Vienna, † September 18, 2005 ) was an Austrian zoologist. Riedl was primarily known for his work in the field of marine sciences ( biology of sea caves, flora and fauna of the Mediterranean ), as well as to systems theory of evolution and evolutionary epistemology. In his later life he was also involved in social and environmental issues. He was the founding President of the Club of Vienna.

Life

As the son of the sculptor Josef Franz Riedl Rupert Riedl began in 1945 to study fine arts, medicine, anthropology and zoology at the University of Vienna and received his doctorate in 1951 after 12 semesters in Zoology. In 1956 he became professor of comparative anatomy and systematics and four years later he obtained his Habilitation and professorship at the Zoological Institute of the University of Vienna. His career has taken him to the USA where he became full professor in 1968 and Research Professor of Marine Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Had returned Rupert Riedl 1971 Board of the Zoological Institute Vienna and previous Head of the Department of Human Biology, both. At the University of Vienna and visiting professor at the University of North Carolina

From 1983-1990 Rupert Riedl served as Chairman of the Institute of Zoology and Anthropology at the University of Vienna. During this time he produced the Austrian television ORF five documentary entitled "The Garden of Poseidon: how lives and dies the Mediterranean ". He was also co-founder of the Konrad Lorenz Institute for Evolution and Cognition Research at the former residence of Konrad Lorenz in Altenberg in 1989. He was then also chairman of the Altenberg Institute and editor of the journal "Evolution and Cognition ". In 1999, he took that function only as honorary president.

At the same time founded Rupert Riedl analogous to the Club of Rome Club of Vienna, which is engaged in interdisciplinary scientific and socio-political issues. Even after his retirement in 1995 held Rupert Riedl until shortly before his death from courses at the University. In his lectures evolution was an important issue. He criticized the factors of Darwin as inadequate; the mutation he described as "blind engineer ", the selection as " short-sighted opportunists ". Riedl suspected a type of preselection already in the region of the genes (as the selection in the field of phenes would be far too costly and could have therefore never brought the "order of life " actually take place). Overall, he looked natural events and insbesonderen the evolutionary development of organisms as a system of networked relationships:

Riedl was buried on Neustift cemetery in Vienna.

Research trips

Rupert Riedl made several research trips. Including by:

His research in North Carolina dealt mainly with the interstitial system of the coasts, the Mesopsammon whose ecological importance Riedl presented in the foreground. Besides, many new species have been discovered specifically from the tribe of gnathostomulids ( Gnathostomulida ).

In addition to his scientific work on the occasion of his 80th birthday appeared some summary books, including a summary of its worldview " My view of the world " and his autobiography " curiosity and amazement ."
