Ruppiner See

The Lake Ruppin is an elongated inland waters in Ostprignitz -Ruppin in the northwest of the state of Brandenburg. The Ruppin lake is 14 km (at a maximum width of 800 m), the longest lake in the state of Brandenburg. Its surface is 825 hectares (8.25 km ²). The lake is crossed from north to south by the Rhine, leaving him in two directions: through the Wustrauer Rhin to the southwest and the southeast Bützsee. Since the Lake Ruppin by definition is a pond, some of the water flows out of the Bützsee in the Upper Havel, but about 150 Havel kilometers downstream the water passes from the Wustrauer Rhin into the Havel, the Lake Ruppin is a Pseudobifurkation.

Formation

The Ruppin lake is located in a glacial trough, which was created in the last ice age, the Weichsel glaciation, about 18,000 years ago. After the melting of the glacier initially remained stagnant ice back in the groove. Only with the warming at the end of the Ice Age about 12,000 years ago when the Toteisblock melted, the lake was formed.

Since 1898, a railway embankment ( railway Kremmen - Wittstock ) cuts through 2.5 kilometers away from the northern shore of the lake in east-west direction.

The Ruppin lake is part of the Ruppin waterway.

The Ruppin lake is the water reservoir for the Rhinluch. By early May, the spring precipitation water is dammed up, then is delivered needs-oriented via the lock Old Friesack water into Rhinluch without the local fen landscape would dry up. The balancing act between the lowering of the lake level and water demand in Rhinluch is potential for conflict between sea and Luchanrainern.
