Rurik

The warägische Prince Rurik ( German also Rurik; Cyrillic Рюрик; Norse Hrœrikr, famous ruler '; * 830; † around 879 ) is considered the founder of the Old Russian state.

He is said to have reigned 862-879 over Novgorod and the land between the rivers Neva and Oka. When his successor Oleg applies the way that should have held the rule as regent for Rurik's son Igor.

Whether it is at Rjurik to a real person or just a legendary figure, is controversial in the history of science for several centuries. In recent years, German and Russian archaeologists have unearthed his probable seat of power in Rurikowo Gorodischtsche. However, it was believed to be largely ensured that Old Ladoga was the most important stronghold of the early Varangians in the Slavic area. From 750 AD, the presence of Scandinavians in the settlement of Old Ladoga is archaeologically documented.

Almost all the grand dukes and princes of the whole Kievan Rus led their lineage back to Rjurik or his two brothers Sineus and Truvor. Named after Rurik dynasty of Rjurikiden prevailed until the late 16th century Russia.

After Rjurik a Russian brig was named, on behalf of Count Nikolai Rumyantsev 1815-1818 a voyage around the world to explore the Northwest Passage undertook (see Rurik expedition ).
