Rus' people

Origin theories

First claimed in the 18th century, the German historian and philologist Gottlieb Siegfried Bayer and August Ludwig von Schlozer, who both worked at the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences, the Scandinavian origin of the Rus. Here, they appealed to the Primary Chronicle. In the 19th century, among other things, the Dane Vilhelm Thomsen took up this theory. In Russia, the Primary Chronicle is usually viewed as insufficient source; Russian theories suggest, therefore, that the Rus Slavs by the Ukrainian river were Ros.
