Rush County (Indiana)

Rush County is a county located in the state of Indiana in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Rushville.

Geography

The County is located in the central south-east of Indiana and has an area of 1058 square kilometers, of which one square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Henry County, Fayette County, Franklin County, Decatur County, Shelby County and Hancock County.

History

Rush County was formed on 31 December 1821 as original county of free territory. It was named after Benjamin Rush, a physician in the Revolutionary War.

Historical buildings

  • North-east of Rushville is the historic Smith Covered Bridge.
  • In Moscow is the historic James F. Harcourt House. It was incorporated in 1989 as a memorial from the NRHP (NRHP ID 89001412 ).

According to the census in 2000 lived in Rush County 18,261 people in 6,923 households and 5,046 families. The population density was 17 people per square kilometer.
