Rushen Abbey is a former Cistercian abbey and on the Isle of Man, a Kronbesitz ( crown dependency ) in the Irish Sea. The monastery is situated in the village of Ballasalla, around 3 km from Castle Rushen.

History

That of King Olaf I. probably founded by one at the site of an older church or an older monastery and built in 1134 the monastery was included as a subsidiary of Furness Abbey in the Cistercian order in 1147. With Savigny monastery in the French department of Manche, whose congregation he or she was, it belonged to the filiation of Clairvaux Abbey Primary. The nave may have been rebuilt before Neuweihe 1257. 1316 the monastery was drawn by Irish pirates significantly affected and subsequently received a defense tower above the northern transept. In 1540 ended the abbey, which was granted to the Earl of Derby. Since 1998, the monastery is owned by Manx National Heritage. The Centre for Manx sudies the University of Liverpool leads in Rushen as before the Department of Archaeology at the University of York excavations.

Plant and buildings

( The sacristy possibly) and walls in the southeast are from the facility, the tower, the passage south of the southern transept available. The other buildings are more recent.
