Russell County (Alabama)
The Russell County is a county located in the state of Alabama in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Phenix City.
Geography
The County is located in southeastern Alabama, on the east by Georgia and has an area of 1677 square kilometers, of which 16 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Barbour County, Bullock County, Macon County and Lee County.
History
Russell County was formed on December 18, 1832 from the former territory of the Creek Indians. It was named after Colonel Gilbert C. Russell, a soldier in the Indian War. The first county seat was Girard, 1868 this was Seale and 1930 Phenix City.

Census of 2000, there were 49 756 people in Russell County. Of these, 687 people were living in collective centers, the other inhabitants lived in 19,741 households and 13,423 families. The population density was 30 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 56.69 percent White, 40.84 percent Black or African American, 0.37 percent Native American, 0.36 percent Asian, 0.07 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.59 percent from other races groups; 1.07 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.50 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 19,741 households out of which 32.0 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. In 44.4 percent lived married couples living together, 18.9 percent were single mothers, 32.0 percent were non-families, 28.0 percent of all households were single-person households, and 10.6 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or above. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 3.05.
26.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 9.1 percent between 18 to 24, 28.8 percent between 25 and 44, 22.4 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.1 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 91 males and females age 18 and over, there 85.9 males.
The median income for a household was $ 27,492, and the median income for a family $ 34,004. Males have a median income of $ 28,696, women $ 20,882. The per capita income was $ 14,015. 16.8 percent of families and 19.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
