Russell County (Alabama)

The Russell County is a county located in the state of Alabama in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Phenix City.

Geography

The County is located in southeastern Alabama, on the east by Georgia and has an area of 1677 square kilometers, of which 16 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Barbour County, Bullock County, Macon County and Lee County.

History

Russell County was formed on December 18, 1832 from the former territory of the Creek Indians. It was named after Colonel Gilbert C. Russell, a soldier in the Indian War. The first county seat was Girard, 1868 this was Seale and 1930 Phenix City.

The average age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 91 males and females age 18 and over, there 85.9 males.
