Russell Kirk

Russell Kirk (* October 19, 1918 in Plymouth, Michigan, † April 29, 1994 in Mecosta, Michigan) was an American political theorist, historian, social critic, moralist, literary critic and author. Through his 1953 book, The Conservative Mind, he significantly shaped the American conservatism of the 20th century. He developed it as a scaffold for the hitherto somewhat amorphous existing conservative movement of the postwar era. The book traces the development of conservative thought in the Anglo-American tradition, where especially the ideas of Edmund Burke to be considered. Kirk was also considered the chief representative of traditionalist conservatism. He was honored with the Presidential Citizens Medal in 1989, the second highest civilian award of the USA.
