Russell Marshall
Cedric Russell Marshall, CNZM (* February 15, 1936 in Nelson) is a New Zealand politician and diplomat.
Biography
Marshall graduated after attending school at first a teaching degree and was after graduation from 1955 to 1956 worked as a teacher. Later, he was from 1960 to 1972 served as a pastor of a Methodist church in 1972, and again briefly as a teacher.
His political career began in 1972 when he selected as the candidate of the New Zealand Labour Party for the first time a member of the House of Representatives (New Zealand House of Representatives ). In this he took after his re- election in 1975, 1978, 1981, 1984 and 1987 to 1990 the constituency Wanganui.
After the election of the Labour Party Prime Minister David Lange appointed him in July 1984 to the Minister of Education (Minister of Education) and Environment Minister (Minister for the Environment ).
In a cabinet reshuffle, he was appointed as Foreign Minister of New Zealand by Lange on 24 August 1987 and held this office under Long 's successor Geoffrey Palmer to 9 February 1990. At the same time he was between 1987 and 1989 also Minister for Disarmament and Arms Control (Minister of Disarmament and Arms Control ) and 1988-1990 Minister for Pacific Affairs ( Minister of Iceland Pacific Affairs ).
After his retirement from the Parliament and the Government, he was from 1990 to 1999 Chairman of the National Commission for UNESCO in New Zealand and at the same time between 1995 and 1999 Member of the Executive Board of UNESCO. Subsequently, he was from 1998 to 2002, Permanent Representative to UNESCO in Paris.
Last Marshall from 2002 to 2005 High Commissioner in the UK.
Upon his return to New Zealand in 2005 he was Chairman of the Commission for the tertiary education sector ( Tertiary Education Commission ). Since July 2007, Russell Marshall is president of the Institute for International Affairs (New Zealand Institute of International Affairs ).
For his services he was appointed Commander of the New Zealand Order of Merit.
