Russell Metty

Russell Metty ( born September 20, 1906 in Los Angeles, California, † April 28, 1978 Canoga Park, California ) was an American cinematographer.

Life

His career in film began in 1925 as an assistant for the standard movie Laboratory. Four years later he was recruited by the film production company RKO Pictures where he began in the early 1930s, first as a second camera operator to work, from 1932, he then worked as a camera operator. In 1934 he turned West of the Pecos, his first film as a single continuous camera man. From now on, Russell Metty was up to its end of life always has a lot in the film business and involved in more than 150 productions. In every age since 1934, he was at least two productions there. With Orson Welles, he directed two films, 1946 The Stranger and 12 years later of Evil. With the director Douglas Sirk, he worked for a total of ten films. In the last decade of his career, he was primarily working for television productions, he acted as a cameraman for 56 episodes of the TV series The Waltons. He was also involved in several episodes of the series Columbo.

In 1961 he was awarded for his work on Spartacus with the Oscar. A year later, he received an Oscar nomination for the film almond eyes and lotus flowers.
