Russia Dock Woodland

The Russia Dock Woodland is a narrow park in Rotherhithe ( London), which was created by the filling of the '' ' Russia Docks ''', a historic harbor basin of the Surrey Commercial Docks. The Russia Dock was originally used as a berth for ships from Norway, Russia and Sweden, the wood brought to London. The soft wood which has been called "Deal Wood ', one used mainly for the production of printing paper and furniture.

After the closure of the docks in the 1970s, the site was redesigned by the London Docklands Development Corporation ( LDDC ). The Russia Dock was filled ( with the exception of a thin rivulet through the forest plantation ) and 1980 reforested to a 140,000 m² of forest planting. There you can still find a few surviving details of the harbor basin, such as First bricks of the walls, water level indicator, bollards, anchor chains and towpaths. 1985 the LDDC an artificial hill, the Stave Hill on the western edge of the park (instead of the historic Stave docks), consisting of the excavation of the Albion Channel ( instead of the historic Albion docks). On the top of the hill a relief map in bronze casting of Michael Rizzello is attached showing the former harbor.
