Ruth Manorama

Ruth Manorama ( born 1952 in Madras ) is an Indian women's rights activist. She was awarded the 2006 Right Livelihood Award.

Biography

Ruth Manorama was born in 1952 in Madras, she belongs to the caste of the Dalit ( " untouchables " ) on. Your parents and they converted to Christianity to escape the discrimination of the caste system in part. She received in 1975 from the University of Chennai a degree in social work and has since been working for the rights of " untouchable " women.

Discrimination against Dalit women resulting from their status as women, members of the lowest caste and of belonging to the poorest layer of Indian society. Manorama is committed to mobilize Dalit women across the country and to network.
