Ruth Zechlin

Ruth Zechlin, born Oschatz ( born June 22, 1926 in Großhartmannsdorf; † August 4, 2007 in Munich) was a German composer, organist, harpsichordist and. She was one of the most important composers of Germany. In 1990, she was principal of the Academy of Music " Hanns Eisler" in Berlin, and from 1990 to 1993 Vice- President of the Academy of Arts in Berlin.

Life

Oschatz Ruth was born in 1926 as a subsidiary of educators Hermann and Friedel Oschatz, born Tillich, in the Saxon Großhartmannsdorf at Freiberg. Her maternal grandparents had a piano factory in Borna. Ruth's father took over in 1928, a lecturer at the University of Leipzig and the family Oschatz settled in the city of Bach. 1937 her sister, who later mezzo-soprano Gisela Pohl was born. Ruth sang in her childhood in a youth choir where she became friends with Gisela May. You already got the age of five piano lessons and composed at the age of seven years, her first composition. In March 1943, she successfully applied for admission at the Leipzig Academy of Music.

From 1943 she studied music theory and choral conducting with Johann Nepomuk David and piano with Anton Rohden. Shortly before the war, she had to work in the Junkers aircraft works in Crimmitschau. In 1945, she was deputy under the cantor John Piersig organist at St. Nicholas Church. The study in Leipzig, she resumed with Karl Straube (organ ) and Günther Ramin ( liturgical organ playing and improvisation ). Other teachers were Hermann Heyer in music history, Wilhelm Weismann in music theory and Rudolf Fischer in piano. In 1949 she closed it from the state exam. Then she taught yearling ear training and piano methodology.

Georg Knepler she took in 1950 to Berlin. She was given a lectureship in harmony, counterpoint, morphology and music studies at the German Academy of Music. Educational she worked with Rudolf Wagner- Régeny and Hanns Eisler, she got acquainted with the works of the Second Viennese School. As a harpsichordist she also undertook extensive concert tours in many European countries. She was a member of the 1950 NDPD ( in the 1980s she joined the CDU). Since 1951, with pianist Dieter Zechlin married, she divorced him in 1972. In 1969 she was appointed professor of composition. In the same year she was elected as an associate and in 1970 a full member of the Academy of Arts of the GDR. There, they then conducted a master class in composition. She stood in close contact with the composer Hans Werner Henze, Witold Lutosławski and. After her retirement in 1986, she taught as a visiting professor. Since 1990 she was a member of the Academy of Arts in Berlin, whose vice president she was until 1993. In 1989 she took part in the concert against the sleep of reason in Berlin. In 1990 she was briefly in place of Erhard Ragwitz Rector of the Academy of Music " Hanns Eisler" Berlin.

After the fall, she moved to Bavaria ( she lived for several years in Passau), where her daughter Claudia lives. They became friends with the Bishop of Passau Franz Xaver Eder and the director Pankrazberg Freiherr von Freyberg. In 2007, she died in Munich. She was buried at the cemetery in Pfaffenhofen. Her estate is now owned by the Berlin State Library.

Zechlin created both instrumental and vocal music and stage works, as well as music for radio dramas, documentaries and television films. Their oeuvre amounts to about 260 compositions.
