Rutherford County (North Carolina)

Rutherford County is a county located in the state of North Carolina of the United States. In 2000, the County had 62 899 inhabitants and a population density of 43 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Rutherfordton.

Geography

The County is located in west-central North Carolina, on the south by South Carolina and has an area of ​​1466 square kilometers, of which 5 square kilometers is water area. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: McDowell County, Burke County, Cleveland County, Polk County, Henderson County and Buncombe County.

Rutherford County is divided into 14 townships: Camp Creek, Chimney Rock, Colfax, Cool Springs, Duncans Creek, Gilkey, Golden Valley, Green Hill, High Shoals, Logan Store, Morgan, Rutherfordton, Sulphur Springs and Union.

History

Rutherford County was formed in 1779 from parts of the defunct Tryon County. It was named, as is the district capital of Rutherfordton, to Griffith Rutherford, a member of the Provincial Congress and a general in the American Revolutionary War.
