Rutigliano

Rutigliano is a southern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 18,467 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the province of Bari, in Puglia. The village is located about 20 kilometers southeast of Bari. It lies in the Murgia.

History

The area was inhabited in pre-Roman times by the Peucetians. The area was fertilized by its clay minerals and the high lime content. Whether the name of the place of the old Roman family name Rutilia, or whether the red clay was named, can only be surmised. In August 1024 the place is mentioned in the documents Pope Nicholas II. Finally, the city falls under Norman rule. Even today testifies to the Torre normanna ( Norman Tower). Finally, they arrived in the course of feudalism under the rule of different families.

Traffic

Earlier, the Strada Statale 634 through the town. Meanwhile, this road is ( Provinciale strada 240 ) to a provincial road downgraded. Rutigliano has a station on the non-electrified railway line Bari - Putignano - Martina Franca, Taranto.
