Rutland is a town in Rutland County, the State of Vermont in the United States with 4,054 inhabitants ( according to the census of 2010 ) ..
Rutland was proclaimed to colonization by Benning Wentworth on September 7 in 1761. The area consisted of particularly good pasture and farmland, which was disputed from the beginning: and the state of New York had it proclaimed for colonization. It was not until the War of Independence (1775-1783) pushed the issue into the background.
The discovery of marble deposits in 1840 and the development of the area by rail, which from 1849 as Rutland Railway Association Rutland over the train track Bellows Falls Burlington in all four directions with the important places of the East Coast and New England, the area went very quickly from one purely agricultural area that was known for its Merino sheep, into an industrial center. Between 1850 and 1880, the population of Rutland quadrupled. 1885 Rutland tram was opened, which should ensure the public transport of the city until the end of 1924.
The rapid development led to the splitting of the original site in four areas: In 1886 West Rutland and Proctor with the large marble quarries on its own, the main town of Rutland and his railway junction became the village, yet an own administration. This was made up in 1892: the chief town was named for the independent city. Within six years of Rutland had now sold not only half of his face and three-quarter of its population, but also the most important marble quarries and its industrial center.
The slow economic decline of the capital in the wake of the global economic crisis in 1929 and after the Second World War left the town Rutland only the original industry left: the fertile land. Today Rutland is again primarily agricultural area with little industrial development.
