Ruy Guerra

Ruy Guerra ( born August 22, 1931 in Lourenço Marques, Mozambique) is a Brazilian film director.

Career

Guerra came as a child to Portugal. Portugal, he left for a film studies in Paris. In the 1950s he worked as an assistant director at the French film and then went to Brazil, where he was one of the founders of Cinema Novo. In his debut film Os Cafajestes two Copacabana crooks he showed the first nude scene in Brazilian cinema at all. The film in the style of the French Nouvelle Vague was shown in competition at the Berlinale in 1962 and founded together with his second film Os Fuzis, for which he won a Silver Bear at the Berlinale in 1964, his fame in Latin American cinema. He received his second Silver Bear at the Berlinale in 1978 for A Queda ( The Fall ).

In 1975 he went back to Mozambique, which had just gained its independence from Portugal. He turned 1980 Mueda, Memory and Massacre the first feature film of Mozambique. Guerra lived after some time in Cuba.

One of his most famous films of recent times is the film adaptation of the story The incredible and sad tale of the simple-minded Eréndira and her heartless grandmother of Gabriel García Márquez. The young Erendira was played by his then- wife, Claudia Ohana, with whom he was married from 1981 to 1984. The grandmother played Irene Papas. His most recent film as a director was 2004. O Veneno da Madrugada ( The evil hour) was also based on a story by Gabriel García Márquez.

Ruy Guerra has taken only a few roles in the course of his film career as an actor. The most notable he received from Werner Herzog. In Aguirre, the Wrath of God he played the 1972 Don Pedro de Ursua on the side of Klaus Kinski.
