Ruy López de Villalobos

Ruy López de Villalobos (* 1500 in Málaga, † 1544 in Ambon ) was a Spanish explorer who crossed in search of the Spice Islands of the Pacific Ocean, while Palau and 1543 discovered the Philippines reached. It is known that he named the Philippines after Philip II of Spain.

1541 López de Villalobos was commissioner for Antonio de Mendoza, the first viceroy of New Spain, to lead an expedition to India in search of new trade routes. He started on 1 November 1542 expedition in the port of Barra de Navidad, Mexico.

While he auskundschaftete new routes in the Pacific, he also discovered the island in the Revillagigedo Islands Inocentes and renamed it La Anublada. Today this island is called San Benedicto.

1543 reached the fleet Luzon, where they anchored a short time. From there, they drove to the southeast until they reached the islands of Samar and Leyte, the Villalobos called the " Philippines ". Because of the hostility of the natives, hunger and the loss of a ship, the expedition members had to abandon the settlement, which they had built in the Philippines, and completed the expedition.

They went to the Moluccas protection, which were ruled by the Portuguese, which caused another fight in which López de Villalobos 1544 at Amboyna (probably today Ambon ) died. The rest of the crew was able to escape and return to New Spain.
