Ryan Shay

Ryan Shay ( born May 4, 1979 in Ypsilanti, Michigan, † November 3, 2007 in New York City ) was an American long-distance runner.

Life and career

Shay's greatest achievement was winning the 2003 U.S. Championships in the marathon. A year later he was at the New York City Marathon ninth, 2005, he occupied at the World Half Marathon Championships in Edmonton in 15th place

Ryan Shay had a competition weight of 70 kg at a height of 1.78 m. He was since July 7, 2007 with the famous and successful in the U.S. long-distance runner Alicia Shay (born Craig, born June 14, 1982, best time in the 10,000 m: min 32:19,97 ) married.

He died during the U.S. Marathon excretion for the 2008 Olympic Games, which took place one day before the New York City Marathon in 2007 in Central Park and at the Shay's friend Ryan Hall won in 2:09:02 h. After nine kilometers Shay collapsed and was taken immediately to the Lenox Hill Hospital, where doctors were only able to find his death. At autopsy, a sudden cardiac arrest was found to be the cause of death. In March 2008, the examining physician announced that Shay had died of complications from heart rhythm disorders that are due to an enlarged heart and scars on the heart muscles. The causes of this fibrosis could not be determined. When Shay an enlarged heart had been diagnosed in youth, in repeated studies, however, the doctors gave the green light again and again for a performance sport. Shay is the first known case of an elite runner who suffered one seconds cardiac death during a competition.
