Ryan Walter

Ryan William Walter ( born April 23, 1958 in New Westminster, British Columbia ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player (Center) and current coach, who for the Washington Capitals, Montreal Canadiens and Vancouver Canucks played from 1978 to 1993 in the National Hockey League. His son Ben Walter is also a professional hockey player.

Career

As a junior at the Kamloops Chiefs in the WCHL with Andy Moog. Within the league, he moved to the Seattle Breakers. There he played a very good season and was selected in the NHL Amateur Draft 1978 in the first round in second place of the Washington Capitals.

He managed to 1978/79 season the immediate jump to the NHL. After a good rookie season, he led in the following years with Mike Gartner and Dennis Maruk to the Scorer List of Capitals. During his time in Washington, he took part with the Canadian national team at the World Ice Hockey Championships in 1979, 1981 and 1982.

Together with Rick Green, he is for Rod Langway, Brian Engblom, Doug Jarvis and Craig Laughlin to the Montreal Canadiens. Nine years he stayed in Montreal and won in the 1985/86 season with the team to the Stanley Cup. An injury cost him most of the season 1990 / 91st

The following season he joined as a free agent with the Vancouver Canucks. There he played primarily a defensive role. After two years in Vancouver, he finished his career.

After the active career he worked from 1993 to 1998 as a television commentator for TSN. From 2008 to 2010, Walter served two seasons as an assistant coach with the Vancouver Canucks under head coach Alain Vigneault. In calendar year 2010, he was hired as head coach of the Canadian national hockey team of the women and was the first time in the 4 Nations Cup behind the gang. At the World Cup 2011 Walter won the silver medal with the Canadian team.
