Ryanodine is a whitish light-sensitive substance which is soluble in methanol and ethanol. It is an alkaloid of the plant Ryania speciosa from South America and is used as an insecticide.

Ryanodine is also toxic to humans even in small amounts. It binds to the ryanodine receptors named after him, which occur mainly in striated skeletal muscle and heart muscle and causes a Calciumausstrom from the sarcoplasmic reticulum. In an intoxication it comes to lasting muscle contractions.
