Rybachy Peninsula

Geographical location

The fishermen peninsula (Russian Полуостров Рыбачий ( Poluostrow Rybatschi ); Finnish Kalastajasaarento ) is a peninsula belonging to Russia in the Barents Sea. In the south it is bounded by the Motowski Bay.

It belongs to the Murmansk Oblast and is close to the border with Norway. The area of ​​1200 km ² is covered by tundra. There are only small settlements. The highest point of the fishermen peninsula lies at 299 m.

History

The western part of the peninsula belonged to Finland from 1920. After the Winter War in 1940, he was but ceded in the Treaty of Moscow along with other areas of the Soviet Union.

From 1942 the German Wehrmacht planned here with the company meadow land a landing behind the Soviet positions on the northern sea. The plan was abandoned in 1944.

A monument commemorates the fallen soldiers of the Red Army.
