Ryrkaypiy

Ryrkaipij (Russian Chukchi of Рыркайпий ) is a village ( selo ) in the Autonomous District of the Chukchi (Russia) with 766 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The village is located about 500 km north- northeast of the county government center Anadyr on the coast of the Chukchi Sea, a marginal sea of the Arctic Ocean at Cape Schmidt ( Mys SmithA ).

Ryrkaipij is part of Rajon Iultinski and is located just 300 km north of its administrative center Egwekinot. It is the only town in the same rural community ( selskoje posselenije ). About 4 km south-east of the village is named after the Cape urban-type settlement Mys SmithA until its connection to the Iultinski rajon 2008 administrative seat of the Schmidtowski rayon.

History

The settlement was first in 1791 mentioned by the English navigator Joseph Billings and listed in a card, with Gavriil Sarytschew undertook at this time a nine -year expedition in the far north- east of Russia, while crossed among other dog teams Chukotka from the southeast and along the north coast to Tschaunbucht drove to the Great Anjui. The tschuktschische place name means mooring of walruses.

Traffic

Ryrkaipij is connected to the 4 km away Mys SmithA by a gravel road. There is regular bus service between the villages. Next a winter road leads to lying inland discontinued settlement Iultin and from there a road into Rajonzentrum Egwekinot on the southern coast of Chukotka. From Ryrkaipij to the northwest along the coast, a 400 km long winter piste route Billings on the discontinued mining community Komsomolski.
