The Ryukoku University (Japanese龙谷 大学, Ryukoku daigaku ) is a Japanese private university, which is supported by the Buddhist Jōdo Shinshu sect Honganji -ha. The main campus is located in Fukakusa - Tsukamotochō, Fushimi- ku, Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture.

History

The University in 1639 as Gakuryō (​​学 寮, literally " dorm " ) founded the temple Nishi Hongan -ji. The school renamed itself in 1655 Gakurin (学 林, dt " seminary " ), then in 1876 Daikyōkō (大 教 校, literally " big school "). 1879, the new school buildings were built in what is now Ōmiya campus.
