Rzeszów

? Rzeszów / i [ ʒɛʃuf ] is a city in southeastern Poland, the capital and major center of the Subcarpathian Voivodeship with over 182 520 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2013).

Between 1941 and 1945 the city was under German occupation the name Reichshof.

Geography

Rzeszów lies on the flood plain of the Wisłok on the edge of the valley of Sandomierz near the Carpathians. The border to Ukraine ( 90 km) and Slovakia (100 km) has made the city a major transportation hub.

History

1354 is the name Resovia first time he is mentioned, it was raised by Magdeburg rights to the city. Beginning of the 15th century, the name of the place was specified in a source under German name Resche.

Culture and Education

Rzeszów is a Roman Catholic bishopric. In the city there is a state university, the Rzeszów Polytechnic as well as several private colleges, including the College of computer science and management.

Pogrom of June 1945

After rumors about the murder of a Christian girl had appeared in the city, the police arrested all the Jews of Rzeszów and performed it on June 1, 1945 in the midst of an angry crowd through the city, while the homes of the arrested Jews were looted. After being released on the same day, fled more than 200 Jews from Rzeszow.

Economy

In Rzeszów many international companies have their headquarters, which are connected with the aviation industry. These include, inter alia, United Technologies Corporation. Air carriers, scientific research centers and institutions of pilot training form the " Aviation Valley ", the aviation cluster around Rzeszów, where 90 % of the production volume of the Polish aviation industry is earned. In addition to aviation industry are here, inter alia, the pharmaceutical company Valeant present, and Cefarm Rzeszów and the IT company Asseco Poland.

Traffic
