S. A. von Rottemburg

SA of Rottemburg (18th century; actually SA Freiherr von Rottemburg ) was a German scientist ( entomologist ).

About Rottemburgs life so far - at least in the history of science literature - virtually nothing is known. An entry in the register of members Berlinischen society naturally inquisitive friends in 1777 cites as his residence at Klemzig Züllichau in the Neumark.

In the 1770s Rottemburg took over the collection of Johann Siegfried Hufnagel lepidopterologische ( 1724-1795 ) and also published a number of treatises. These publications are of great importance because they allow us to identify many of the ( as in table format) described and therefore often difficult recognizable types of Hufnagel extremely short and almost certain.

In addition, he described himself a number of new taxa, some of which are still valid types are:

  • Paranthrene tabaniformis ( Sesiidae )
  • Hyles gallii ( Sphingidae )
  • Thymelicus Acteon ( Hesperiidae )
  • Lycaena Alciphron ( Lycaenidae )
  • Polyommatus bellargus, Polyommatus icarus, Polyommatus semiargus ( Lycaenidae )
  • Brenthis ino ( Nymphalidae )
  • Euphydryas aurinia ( Nymphalidae )
  • Melitaea athalia ( Nymphalidae )
  • Hyponephele lycaon ( Nymphalidae )

As he described some of these species from Landsberg on the Warta River, it is possible that he temporarily lived there or his family had possessions there. The whereabouts of the Hufnagel - Rottemburg collection is not known; probably no longer exists. In the zoological literature his name is abbreviated mostly as " Rott. ".
