S. Darius and S. GirÄ—nas Airport

The airfield Aleksotas ( ICAO code: EYKS ) is an airfield in the southern district Aleksotas of Kaunas in Lithuania.

History

The airfield was during World War II landing strip for war blimps with airship hangar. Later it was removed for transport aircraft and initially served afterwards as a civilian airfield. Since the completion of the eastern of the new international airport Kaunas Kaunas ( Lithuanian Oro uostas Karmėlava ) in the vicinity of the place Karmėlava the airfield Aleksotas is only used as an airfield. The airfield itself is in a very good condition, equipped with an asphalt track ( without anti- skid ), a parallel taxiway with multiple driveways. However, he does not have a runway lighting, an approach control or other approach aids.

On the site there is also the Lithuanian Aviation Museum with many exhibits Lithuanian (and thus linked Russian ) aviation history, and a monument with plaques of any injured Airmen of the country. The place is nicknamed the two Lithuanian aviation pioneers Darius and Girenas which also adorn the 10 - litas banknote. On the square there are some Yak- 52, with which visitors can participate in the taking place every weekend aerobatics. In addition, home-built ultralight aircraft, motor trikes and other flying machines can be examined in action there. In the western part of the square is one of the forts that surround Kaunas and Klaipėda in this area.
